What Is A Hotspot?

Hotspot - What It Does

When you try to use your WiFi phone, it needs to connect to the internet to complete your call. But WiFi phones are not connected by wires, so they need some way to access the internet wirelessly. A hotspot provides that way - it allows your WiFi phone or any other computer device to wirelessly connect to the internet.

A hotspot is a location which typically has a router and modem connected to a DSL or cable internet. It works on the WiFi wireless fidelity technology to send out and receive radio signals. These signals fan out in all directions of the hotspot location to a certain range.

If you are physically within the coverage area of a wireless network hotspot, your WiFi phone's scanning device can find and connect to the hotspot and get access to the internet. However if you are driving while using your WiFi phone, your WiFi phone will stop working when it leaves the signal range of a hotspot.

Hotspots are generally located in cafes, restaurants, railway stations, airport, libraries or public places. Many cities in the US have created wireless network zones for residents and visitors. Some schools and universities also have such wireless network hotspots in their campus.

Are Hotspots Free?

No, not all.

Wireless networks in public places are generally 'open' that is you don't have to pay anything to use the internet.

You also may find that some commercial establishments like restaurants or cafes won't charge you for connecting to the internet by their hotspots - this is their way to attract customers who would be inclined to buy something from them while using their free service.

Otherwise you may have to pay for use of a hotspot by creating an online account and making payment by your credit card or online account like Paypal.

Coming - The Biggest Hotspot Of All

WiFi phones cost you less to make calls than cellular phones. However WiFi phones need hotspots to work. The more hotspots there are, the more area for your WiFi phone to make cheap calls. This is why hotspots are springing up everywhere in all countries.

That day is not far off when the whole world is covered by the wireless network, turning the earth into a one big hotspot. It will be then that the WiFi phones will come into their own.

Will you think of using a cell phone then?
